CHAPTER 7 – THE ROXY THEATER

I follow the cat down the spiral staircase, across the bar -- where the short drunken man is passed out and the fat lady is counting money by the cashier -- all the way outside back to the hallway.

The cat is gone, and the corridor is deserted.

We've been drifting for a while now, and I haven't seen Druk or the blonde girl or anyone that looks to be in charge. I wonder if there is anyone in charge of this ship.

Picking a direction, I start walking. The corridor seems narrower than before, and for a long time I walk straight ahead between solid metal, no doors on any side.

After about ten minutes, the way reaches an abrupt end in the form of a solid wall. No doors, no passageway. Just a white metal wall.

With a sigh, I turn back to go in the other direction...

… to find a door not three inches away from my face, where the corridor I just came from should be.

Not a sliding door like the other ones from before. This door has a knob, and it's wooden and large. A brushed metal sign nailed to it reads 'THE LOCKED ROOM'.

I try the knob and feel a bit stupid when it doesn't open.

"Hello?" comes a faint voice from the other side. "Is there anyone there?"

"Hi," I say, unsure. "I'm – uh – I think I got lost. My name is Dean, I –"

"Hello?"

I pause. "Hi. Can you hear me?"

"Is there anyone there? Please help me."

"Yes. I am here. Can you hear me?"

There's a knock from the other side. "Hello?"

"You're not supposed to be here," another, lower-pitched voice reaches me, this time from behind.

I look back, but there's no one there.

From the door, the first voice again: "Hello? Please, I'm trapped!"

I look from one side to the other, a slight claustrophobic feeling creeping in as the narrow space seems to close in on me. "Hang on!" I yell to the door.

"Down here," comes the low-pitched voice again. "Come."

Just as I look down, the floor blinks and disappears from sight like a hologram malfunctioning. There's a fraction of a second where I stand still like a cartoon character past a cliff. Then I fall into darkness.
